Recycling Summit

Tuesday night the Energy and Environmental Advisory Committee and the Go Green Committee met with Joan Cornetta, Derry’s Recycling Coordinator.  Joan explained how recycling works in town and how this effort is paying off.  She also talked about what hasn’t worked and what we could do to improve. We make money on paper, cardboard, and scrap metal. We pay to have our commingled recyclables hauled away and that company sorts and makes money on our recycling efforts. In fact they make money on us twice. So the question is what would it take for Derry to be able to do their own sorting and make the money for our town. Look at it this way, recycling is the right thing to do for the planet and it is a valuable revenue stream for the town.
