This weekend I had an opportunity to check out a Green House Tour. Tom and Hope Minnon opened their home to the public. Taking visitors through their home and yard and explaining changes they have made to make their home more earth friendly and energy efficient. Their front yard is certified by the NWF as a wildlife habitat and features a koi pond and a large variety of wildflowers, it was just lovely and very peaceful. From there we went inside and learned about composting with red wiggler worms. Then it was out to the back yard to view solar panels for heating hot water and solar panels for creating electricity and a nifty battery operated lawn mower. Next stop was the basement to see how all that solar power was being used; we were also shown the geothermal system that is used to both heat and cool the home.
I learned a lot and realized that I still have a lot to learn. I think this is the ultimate model home for living greener. I appreciated the this was an existing home and that the Minnon’s have spent the last ten years working on this one project at a time. We can all take a note that living greener can start with the small things and as those bigger projects come up look for those more sustainable earth friendly options.
Many thanks to Tom and Hope for sharing your dream house with us.
